The Journal of Social Media Research (JSOMER) invites submissions for a special issue dedicated to the theme: “Social Media and Artificial Intelligence in Education: Dynamics of Governance, Ethics, and Learning”. This special issue, guest edited by Dr. Murat Polat, Dr. Mevlüt Kara, and Dr. I-Hua, Chen.

The convergence of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) has triggered a fundamental rethinking of how education is governed, practiced, and experienced. As digital platforms and intelligent systems increasingly mediate communication, learning, and decision-making in schools and universities, they bring both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges.

Social media platforms, while enabling student agency and connected learning, also raise concerns about surveillance, cyberbullying, algorithmic bias, and digital distraction. Similarly, AI-powered tools in education—ranging from adaptive learning systems to predictive analytics—offer efficiency and personalization but also demand critical scrutiny regarding ethics, transparency, and equity.

This Special Issue seeks to critically examine the evolving relationship between education, social media, and AI, with a particular emphasis on three interconnected dimensions:

Governance and Educational Leadership

Ethical and Legal Considerations

Learning and Pedagogical Innovation

By bringing together empirical studies, theoretical perspectives, policy analyses, and critical reflections, we aim to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue that informs future directions in education research, practice, and policy-making.

Educational policy responses to AI and social media integration
