Access, Licensing, Archiving, and Preservation

01Copyright Ownership and Publishing Rights View details +

Authors retain copyright in articles published by JSOMER. The journal does not require copyright transfer or exclusive publishing rights.

By submitting a manuscript and approving the final proof, authors grant JSOMER the nonexclusive rights needed to publish the article first, identify JSOMER as the original publisher, reproduce and distribute the article, maintain permanent online access, register and maintain the DOI, distribute metadata, submit content to legitimate indexing and preservation services, and preserve the scholarly record.

No separate copyright-transfer agreement, exclusive publishing contract, or signed licensing form is required. Author approval is documented through OJS submission declarations and final proof approval.

02Creative Commons License and Third-Party Material View details +

Unless a published item clearly states otherwise, JSOMER articles are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).

License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/

Users may copy and redistribute the unchanged article in any medium or format when appropriate credit is given, the original JSOMER publication and DOI are identified, the license is linked, the use is noncommercial, and no modified, adapted, remixed, transformed, or translated version is distributed without separate permission.

The license applies only to material the rights holder is legally authorized to license. Third-party material used under permission, a different license, or a legal exception should be identified in the relevant caption, note, or credit line. Users are responsible for obtaining any additional permission required for excluded material.

Open access does not remove copyright, privacy, data-protection, moral-rights, contractual, ethical, participant-consent, or sensitive-data restrictions.

03Article-Level Access and Persistent Identifiers View details +

Each published article should have an individual, publicly accessible landing page and full-text file. Access must not require payment or user registration.

Where applicable, the landing page should display the article title, authors, affiliations, abstract, keywords, article type, publication details, DOI, citation information, full text, copyright and license, disclosures, supplementary files, and links to post-publication notices.

JSOMER assigns DOIs to published scholarly articles using the prefix 10.29329. Authors, readers, repositories, and scholarly services are encouraged to use the DOI when citing or linking to an article. Formal post-publication notices may also receive persistent identifiers where technically possible.

04Metadata and Machine-Readable Access View details +

JSOMER seeks to provide accurate and structured journal and article metadata, including titles, abstracts, keywords, article types, author names, ORCID iDs, affiliations, publication dates, volume and issue information, pagination, DOI, references, funding, copyright, licensing, ethics statements, Data Availability Statements, and post-publication status.

The journal seeks consistency among OJS records, article landing pages, published files, Crossref metadata, OAI-PMH records, repositories, discovery systems, indexing services, and preservation services. Metadata errors may be corrected when identified.

OJS supports the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), enabling compatible scholarly systems to harvest publicly available metadata. OAI-PMH availability does not authorize uses that violate copyright, licensing, privacy, contractual, ethical, or third-party restrictions.

05Preprints View details +

Authors may post a preprint before submission or while a manuscript is under consideration. A preprint does not, by itself, constitute prior publication.

  • disclose the preprint during submission;
  • provide its DOI or URL where available;
  • ensure that posting does not violate privacy, confidentiality, copyright, contractual, or ethical obligations;
  • avoid describing the preprint as peer-reviewed, accepted, or published before the relevant decision; and
  • disclose material differences between the preprint and submitted manuscript when relevant.

After publication, authors should update the preprint record with the complete JSOMER citation, DOI, link to the version of record, and a statement that the article has been published in JSOMER.

06Accepted Manuscripts and Versions of Record View details +

An accepted manuscript is the author’s final version after peer review and editorial acceptance but before final copyediting, layout, typesetting, and production. It may be deposited without an embargo but must be identified accurately and must not be represented as the version of record.

A suitable notice is: “This manuscript has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Social Media Research. The final published version is available at: [DOI or official article URL].”

The version of record is the final article formally published after peer review, acceptance, production, author proof approval, and online publication. It may be deposited without an embargo. The published content, citation, DOI, copyright notice, license, and post-publication status must remain visible, and a modified file must not be presented as the version of record.

07Repository Records and Self-Archiving Conditions View details +

Authors do not need separate permission from JSOMER to archive permitted versions in personal academic websites, institutional or disciplinary repositories, funder-designated repositories, nonprofit scholarly networks, research-information systems, theses and dissertations, or other noncommercial scholarly platforms.

Repository records should identify the article title, authors, journal, year, volume and issue, page range or article number, DOI, official URL, version, copyright, license, and any post-publication status. Records should remain linked to the official JSOMER page, and correction, retraction, or other status notices must not be concealed or omitted.

JSOMER does not charge a self-archiving or repository-deposit fee.

08Research Data and Supplementary Materials View details +

Open access to an article does not automatically require unrestricted public release of all underlying data. Data, code, materials, protocols, and supplementary resources should be shared when ethically, legally, contractually, and technically possible.

Sharing may be limited by participant privacy, informed consent, ethics approval, data-protection law, clinical confidentiality, institutional restrictions, third-party ownership, platform terms, intellectual property, security concerns, risks to individuals or communities, or other legitimate restrictions.

Detailed requirements for Data Availability Statements, repositories, data citation, restricted access, analytical code, social media data, clinical data, and reproducibility are addressed in the Research Data and Reproducibility Policy.

09Digital Preservation Status and Services View details +

Digital preservation protects published content against technological failure, accidental loss, organizational change, and long-term inaccessibility. JSOMER uses Open Journal Systems, which provides a CLOCKSS-compatible publisher manifest identifying published archival units for compatible preservation workflows.

The existence of the manifest does not establish an active preservation agreement or confirmed deposit with CLOCKSS. JSOMER will not claim active preservation by CLOCKSS, LOCKSS, the PKP Preservation Network, Portico, or another service unless participation and successful preservation have been confirmed.

Publisher manifest: https://jsomer.org/index.php/pub/gateway/clockss

If JSOMER activates a formal preservation service, this policy will identify the service, activation date, scope of coverage, and verifiable deposit status where available. Technical settings, plugins, manifests, or permission statements alone will not be presented as proof of successful preservation.

10Preservation, Backups, and the Scholarly Record View details +

Digital preservation and operational backups serve different purposes. Preservation supports long-term continuity and potential access after a trigger event. Backups support recovery after server failure, accidental deletion, software problems, database corruption, cyberattack, or another technical incident.

JSOMER seeks to maintain appropriate backups of the OJS database, published article and issue files, metadata, supplementary materials, editorial and production records, website configuration, policies, and other operationally necessary content.

The journal seeks to preserve published issues, article files, metadata, supplementary materials, DOI and licensing information, corrections, retraction notices, Expressions of Concern, removal notices, and other records needed to interpret publication status. Post-publication notices should remain linked to affected articles wherever technically possible.

A published article will not be removed merely because its conclusions become controversial, an author changes views, criticism occurs, or reputational concerns arise. Corrections, retractions, Expressions of Concern, and exceptional removals are handled under the journal’s post-publication policy.

11Journal Cessation, Website Availability, and Migration View details +

If JSOMER ceases publication or its primary website becomes unavailable, the publisher will seek to preserve access to previously published content. Measures may include a read-only archive, continued DOI resolution, preserved landing pages, deposit with a recognized preservation or repository service, a trigger-event mechanism, or transfer to a suitable nonprofit or academic organization.

When content is migrated to a new OJS version, platform, server, host, domain, file format, or preservation system, the journal will seek to preserve article identity, DOI resolution, citations, publication dates, issue structure, author and affiliation metadata, licensing, supplementary files, post-publication links, and public full-text access.

Migration must not conceal changes to the version of record or remove publication-history information. If the domain or platform changes, reasonable efforts will be made to maintain redirects and DOI resolution.

12Corrections, Version Control, and Metadata Dissemination View details +

The formally published article is the version of record. Substantive post-publication changes must not be made silently. When a material change is necessary, an appropriate notice should identify and link to the affected article, metadata should be updated where technically possible, and the publication history should remain understandable.

Minor technical corrections that do not affect meaning, interpretation, attribution, evidence, or publication status may be made without a separate formal notice. Such corrections must not conceal substantive alterations.

JSOMER may distribute metadata to Crossref, DOAJ, indexing and abstracting services, scholarly search engines, libraries, repositories, research-information and citation-management systems, preservation services, and other legitimate scholarly infrastructures to support discoverability, citation, linking, verification, preservation, and access. Metadata distribution does not transfer copyright ownership or authorize use beyond the applicable license and law.

13Equitable Access and Policy Review View details +

Access to JSOMER content does not depend on institutional affiliation, geographic location, academic status, professional membership, nationality, ability to pay, subscription status, or journal registration.

Temporary limitations may arise from maintenance, cybersecurity incidents, server failure, external network restrictions, legal requirements, or other exceptional circumstances. The journal will seek to restore access promptly and maintain continuity through available infrastructure and preservation arrangements.

JSOMER reviews this policy periodically to ensure consistency with its actual technical infrastructure, preservation arrangements, copyright and licensing practices, OJS configuration, DOI and metadata practices, repository permissions, open-access requirements, and recognized scholarly publishing standards.

The page will be updated when a preservation service is activated or discontinued, the license or repository conditions change, the publishing platform changes materially, the open-access model changes, or another material development affects long-term access. No preservation service will be advertised as active until participation has been confirmed.
